Taking place in 1970’s Texas, my design of Lydia explores an immigrant family’s effort to either maintain a sense of home and reject American sensibilities or assimilate into white American culture in an effort to achieve the “American Dream”. The costumes are honest and thoughtful in their representation of the characters, pulling inspiration from period photography, and representing each character in relation to their goals and circumstances. There is no defined color palette, but all choices are made to feel natural and realistic for the 1970’s. The show covers a variety of sensitive topics, so certain design choices are made in collaboration with the individual performers to encourage safety and comfort, as well as the Wig and Makeup department.
